Monthly Meeting Minutes
January 8, 2018
Litchfield Community Center

Present:  Doreen Deary,  Margaret Dillon,  Christine Horrigan,  Lois Keen,  Marilyn Lieff,  Kerry Mayers, Jackie Miller,  Marie Wallace

Absent:   Carolyn Martin, Meredith Penfield, Bibby Veerman

Call to Order:   Kerry Mayers called the meeting to order at 9:13 am.

Minutes:   A motion was made to pass the December 4, 2017 minutes,  The minutes were approved and accepted.

Treasurer’s Report:   The Treasurer’s Report is postponed until the next meeting since Meredith Penfield was not in attendance.

Kerry reported that LWVLC received a check from Ben and Audrey Solnit to be used for “Vote Today” signs. The Board is grateful for their generosity.

Kerry asked Margaret Dillon to put together a presentation on how to use Twitter.

Torrington High School sent in a form to be filled out regarding our THS scholarship.  This is an annual formality.

Membership: Kerry reiterated that members who have not paid their dues for the coming year will be taken off the membership list and put on a “friends” list.  There is one new member to report: Kerry Noble.  Welcome, Kerry.


Gerrymandering:   Members have received a postcard reminder publicizing the  January 14, 2018 program on the subject of gerrymandering.  Please let your friends know and mark your calendars for an interesting and informative afternoon discussion.,  January 14, 2018, 3:30 pm at the Litchfield Historical Society.  If you would like to bring hors d’oeuvres, please contact Jackie Miller, pjaa@optonline.net.

Lunch and Learn:   L&L will devote the January 18th meeting to following up on the gerrymandering program.  Please note that L&L will now start at 1 pm at the Oliver Wolcott Library.  Bring a friend.

Legislators Meeting:   Preparations for the annual Legislator’s Meeting to be held on February 24th are moving along.  Please contact Kerry Mayers: kerwinkmayers@gmail.com if you would like to assist in some way.

International Luncheon:   Plans for the annual International  Luncheon are coming together.  Bibby Veerman has made arrangements for James Hatt, former British diplomat, to speak on Russia and the political process in foreign countries.  The event will be held at Camp Washington in Morris on  Saturday, April 28th.  Mark your calendars with more details to follow.  Kerry and Kathy Thompson will visit the camp to check out the facilities.

Action:    Judy Armstrong is interested in attending the Advocacy program sponsored by state LWV, to be held on January 9th.

The Voice: A reminder to everyone to sign and source articles (with authorship) submitted to The Voice.   Christine Horrigan will present the League’s policy of non partisanship at a future BofD meeting.

Voter Services: Discussion revolved around voters who transfer their registration from one town to another.  Christine reports that the State has a centralized database which allows the Registrar of Voters to change the residence in an efficient manner.

Observers:   Kerry reiterated the importance of member participation at the local level, i.e., being an Observer or  attending political debates.

Publicity: Doreen Deery reported that Doug Parker of Litchfield Bz has given the LWVLC/LHS program on gerrymandering good coverage.  Doreen will send out info to the Rep-American again.

Miscellaneous:  The next Board of Directors meeting is February 5, 2017, 9 am at the Litchfield Community Center.  Members are welcome.

Kerry adjourned the meeting at 10:10 am.
