LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF LITCHFIELD COUNTY POSITION ON GUN LAWS
Adopted by the Board on May 7, 2018
The League of Women Voters of Litchfield County believes that the proliferation of handguns and semi-automatic assault weapons in the United States is a major health and safety threat to its citizens. The League supports strong federal, state and local measures to limit the accessibility and regulate the ownership of these weapons by private citizens. The League supports regulating firearms for consumer safety.
To further this position, the League of Women Voters of Litchfield County encourages and supports the creation of gun-free zones, either voluntarily or by legislation, in places and buildings generally open to the public, e.g. government-owned buildings and properties, schools, parks, churches, libraries, recreational areas and buildings, playing fields, stores, restaurant and bars, shopping centers, hospitals, medical facilities and other privately-owned properties where members of the public regularly meet or gather.
