League of Women Voters of Litchfield County, LWVLC
Board of Directors
Monthly Meeting Minutes
May 7, 2018
Litchfield Community Center

Present:  Margaret Dillon,  Christine Horrigan,  Lois Keen,  Marilyn Lieff,  Kerry Mayers, Jackie Miller, Meredith Penfield, Bibby Veerman, Marie Wallace

Absent:   Doreen Deary, Carolyn Martin

Call to Order:   Kerry Mayers called the meeting to order at 9:01 am.

Minutes:   A motion was made to pass the April 1st minutes.   The minutes were approved and accepted.

Treasurer’s Report: Meredith Penfield reviewed the bookkeeping for 2017 and the start of 2018.

Discussion centered around last month’s passed motion which raised the annual membership dues to $60 from $50.  The BofD decided to present this issue to the general membership at the upcoming Annual Meeting on June 18th, since some Board members felt it was too much of a jump.   A motion was made, approved and passed that the membership amount will be discussed and voted upon at the June 18th meeting, an increase to $55 or $60.  Meredith broke down the current dues of $50, with $16.50 going to LWVCT and $32 going to the national organization.  It is surprising how much gets done with the few dollars remaining.

Budget reports will be made available at the next meeting.

Membership: The membership list will be updated to reflect all new members.  The data list received from the national LWV will continue to be updated and modified for local use by the BofD.   Jackie Miller will contact new members for any missing information, and Margaret Dillon will continue to update the Gmail account contact list. Discussion centered around the most efficient way of handling checks from new members.  The Board thanked Jackie for all of her endeavors regarding new members.

Kerry reminded all members that dues for the coming year need to be paid by the Annual Meeting in June.  Members who do not pay their dues will be taken off the membership list and put on a “friends” list.

Annual International Luncheon-April 28    Dr. James Hatt addressed our group at the Litchfield Country Club.  His topic was Putin’s Grand Strategy and Creative Chaos based on his business experiences while directly negotiating with Putin when he was deputy mayor of St. Petersburg.  The talk was well received, with 48 attendees.  A Q&A session followed his talk.  We could have sat and listened to his experiences and insights all afternoon, but we ran out of time!  Members expressed interest in bringing back Dr. Hatt, and Kerry said that he would be happy to return to expand on that topic or another.  All in all, an event well received, pertinent to today’s political climate.  Kudos to all who helped to organized it.

Lunch and Learn-Consensus Meeting:   The main discussion of L&L held on April 19th at St. Michael’s, Church in Litchfield, revolved around creating a local position on gun violence.  Christine Horrigan spoke about current Connecticut law and the State League’s position, what towns have done, and how we can frame talking points about gun free zones to present to other non-profits and to local elected officials.  Other presenters were Lois Keen, Judi Armstrong and Lynn Fulkerson. This issue and how to get involved will be brought up at the Annual Meeting.  Kerry has already made a presentation at the Goshen Library on this subject and used talking points from the L&L..   Moving forward, the Board passed a motion to encourage educating local communities on how to go about creating a gun free zone.

Annual Meeting   The Annual Meeting of LWVLC will be held on June 18th at Bibi Veerman’s home, 318 South Street, Litchfield.  Board members will bring  snacks, and hot drinks will be served.   ALL members are encouraged to come, especially new members.  Topics to be discussed include gun free zones and the national popular vote.

Legislators Meeting:    There will not be a Small Towns, Big Issues potluck luncheon this season.  The BofD  talked about a possible picnic later on, perhaps this summer.   Fyi for new members, the League invites area politicians to attend this event and discuss current issues.

Voter Services:   Stay tuned.

Publicity:   There was excellent publicity for the International Luncheon in area media outlets.

Miscellaneous:   Marie Wallace has sent out get well cards to Joan Bertaccini and Lynn Hoopes..  She also sent out a thank you note to Carolyn Martin who resigns this June from the BofD after many years of dedicated service, employing her writing skills and devotion to issues. The Board will send a plant to Doreen Deary who has been recovering from surgery

Kerry announced the LWVLC will cosponsor with Partners in Community and Safety a program on Gun Violence on June 24 in Canaan.  Other areas of violence prevention will be addressed later.

Kerry said that she has been asked to meet with Audrey Solnit and Vanita Bhalla to discuss the possibility of a collaboration with WeCAN, an advocacy group focusing on education about public issues which may overlap with League priorities.

The next BofD meeting is Monday, June 4, 2018 at the Litchfield Community Center, 9 am.

All members are welcome.

Reminder:   Annual Meeting is June 18th at Bibi Veerman’s home, 318 South Street, Litchfield.   Please mark your calendar.

Kerry adjourned the meeting at 10:15 am.

Respectfully submitted,
Margaret Dillon
